It’s difficult to trace the origins of Riva di Solto and establish when they go back to. There are finds which can be traced back to the Stone Age and which indicate that man has been present since prehistoric times.

Over the centuries the town has gained importance thanks to the extraction of the typical black marble in the district called Zu. Important buildings were built using this marble, among them. St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Subsequently, cement extraction was introduced alongside that of marble with positive effects on the economy.

At any rate, from a purely artistic and cultural point of view there are various religious buildings and buildings for worship, such as the parish church. The latter was built in about 1055 and extended between 1729 and 1880, when it was consecrated. Inside there are some 17th and 18th-century paintings while the old organ was restored in about 1860.

There is also the little church of S. Rocco which was built at the will of the people during the plague of 1530; the church of S. Bernardino was built in1480 and visited by San Carlo Borromeo (St. Charles Borromeo) with a view to admiring the 15th-century frescoes which have now been moved to the larger parish church. Lastly, there is the small church of Gargarino, built between the 11th and 12th centuries; it is the oldest church on the hill and inside you can see some wonderful 13th-century frescoes.

As from the 20th century, business activities linked to the demands of tourism have continued to flourish in the town. Among these are camp sites, cafés and restaurants aiming to make the most of its position overlooking the lake “riviera”.

You really must stop off to see the ravine called the orrido del Bogn. To get there you walk along the lakeside road from Riva di Solto towards Lovere. The Bogn is one of the treasured wonders of nature in the area. Driving on towards the village of Castro and the small town of Lovere, the road is dug out of the rock and the sheer drop down to the waters below offers thrilling views and stunning scenery.
